Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)
9/10. Alexandra had never seen Aguirre, so we finally watched it last night. I had forgotten how utterly stunning the opening sequence is. Wish I could see this one day on a big screen. I did remember, though, the devastating power of the final scene. What a delirious descent into the madness of trying to colonize another people and land. Kinski was certifiable, but what a presence. Though I had seen this several times, it was the first time I had heard Herzog's commentary on the film. It's almost as entertaining as the movie itself.
