Gone To Texas

I've journeyed back to mi tierra this week, visiting family out in West Texas. Won't be able to blog again until I return.

Meanwhile, here are some morsels from the Lone Star State . . .

Roy Orbison hailed from nearby Wink, Texas, which is just the other side of Notrees, Texas. (No, there are no trees in Notrees, Texas.) My father and aunt saw Roy play at their high school dances back before he became famous. Here he's doing "Only the Lonely," which goes out to La Reina, who I cry out for like a coyote when she's so far away.

A genuine Texas tumbleweed.

We saw one on the road from the airport to the house. Felt like a cosmic, "Welcome Back, Son."

Another West Texas boy, Buddy Holly (from Lubbock), sings "Peggy Sue." (Ah, Buddy, you died too soon.)

And just to show the range of Texas culture, here's a clip of Kilgore boy Van Cliburn playing Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No.12. In 1958, at the heighth of the Cold War, Cliburn won the First International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, a stunning accomplishment at the time. He was welcomed back to the USA with a ticker-tape parade in New York City and made the cover of Time, with the headline: "The Texan Who Conquered Russia." According to Wikipedia, Cliburn's "subsequent recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, became the first classical album to sell a million copies. It was the best-selling classical album in the world for more than a decade, eventually going triple-platinum."

Since my own experience is a Tex-Mex one, I thought I'd include some Tejano music, courtesy of Flaco Jimenez, Freddy Fender, Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers, better known as the Texas Tornadoes: "Hey, Baby, Que Paso?"

Gonna go heat up some tamales and open a Shiner Bock. See y'all real soon. . . .

William,

Jets 17 Pats 14

Congrats. :-\

Hey, in your Ode to Texas, you forgot to mention the famous Spongebob Squarepants episode where Sandy the Squirrel waxes nostalgic for Texas..

Wish I was back in Texas,
The ocean's no place for a squirrel
Wish I was in Texas,
Prettiest place in the world, oh no
I guess deep in my heart,
I'll always be a Texas girl
I wanna go hommmme...hoommmmme,
Yodel-ay-e-oh, yodel-ay-e-oh,
Yodel-ay-e-oh, a-lay-ee, a-lay-ee
I wanna wake up in Texas,
I miss those wide, open skies
I miss my twenty acres,
Barbeques and pecan pies, oh why
When I'm so far from you Texas,
All I can do is cry
Yodel-ay-e-oh, yodel-ay-e-oh,
Yodel-ay-e-oh, a-lay-ee, a-lay-ee
I wanna go hoommme,
(deep voice) I wanna go hooommmmme

Enjoy your trip home... "The eyes of Texas are upon you..."

By the way, thanks for posting your better half's poems. I admit that I'm usually a real philistine when it comes to poetry appreciation, but I really enjoyed them.

Crystal,

You think they'd let me bring a tumbleweed on the plane? I already got in trouble at JFK because I forgot I had a bottle of water in my backpack. They didn't like that. I could try to stuff it in and see if they noticed anything unusual.

Jeff,

Thanks for the song. I've never seen Spongebob Squarepants. I'll have to check out your link. And thanks for the kind words about La Reina's poetry.

I was shocked at the result of Sunday's game. Of course, here in Texas, they weren't showing it - I got Houston vs. Jacksonville. But as the Jets-Pats moved into the 4th quarter, I decided to follow it off and on via the internet. What happened to the Pats? What's going on with Tom? He's probably my favorite QB. Seems to be struggling the last 2 weeks.

Y'all ain't into Spongebob? Forgive me, I've got a pack of kids... We've got Spongebob on a lot. It makes me crazy... You haven't noticed it being talked about by students on campus? I thought college kids were into Spongebob in a big way.

Man, I don't know what to make of the way Brady has been playing lately. He doesn't have much to work with in terms of receivers, so there seems to be a bit of confusion there. He seems oddly off-target though. What concerns me more is the defense. They seem clueless out there without Rodney Harrison anchoring them at safety.

This was a strange weekend. Columbia won. I hear the Pats have signed Vinnie Testaverde. Things are weird.

Hope you're doing well, Guillaume.

Vinny! The guy's two weeks older than I am. Incredible. Maybe if he went for a MBA or something, he could play for Columbia. Hmm...
